Nepal’s Streets Erupt: Military Steps In After Fatal Protest Violence

Violent pro-monarchy protests in Kathmandu led to two deaths—a protester, Sabin Maharjan, shot by police, and journalist Suresh Rajak, who died in a fire set by rioters. The unrest began when pro-monarch businessman Durga Prasai rammed a vehicle through a police barricade, triggering arson and clashes. Authorities imposed a curfew and deployed the Nepal Army. Prasai is on the run, with an arrest order issued. The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) supported the protests, and former King Gyanendra Shah’s role is under scrutiny. Protesters vandalized buildings and attacked Communist Party offices. Nepal abolished its monarchy in 2006, but royalist sentiments persist.
