Portugal cannot miss "new cycle of wealth creation": president

Oct 06, 2021

Lisbon (Portugal), October 6: Portugal cannot lose a "new cycle of wealth creation" after the COVID-19 pandemic, the country's President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, said on Tuesday at a ceremony commemorating the 111th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Portugal.
Rebelo de Sousa said that his country makes good use of the European funds to reactivate the economy, make the country "more inclusive," and help "two million poor people" and a few more "at risk of poverty."
According to him, Portugal should lead Europe in this "new economic cycle focused on climate, energy, digital, science, technology and the renewal of the productive sector."
"We have additional means of financing to be used with rigor, efficiency and transparency. Wasting time is losing an opportunity that may never come back," he said.
Rebelo de Sousa said that Oct. 5 is a "living date" that motivates Portugal to be a "richer, more inclusive, fairer" country based on "knowledge, qualification and culture."
"After the pandemic has been overcome, Portugal will have a unique and unrepeatable opportunity to rebuild destinies, to renew hopes, to renew dreams."
