Moscow downplays the importance of Biden's visit to Kiev

Feb 21, 2023

Moscow [Russia], February 21: Officials and state media of Russia are downplaying today the importance of the surprise visit of US President Joseph Biden to Ukraine, assessing that the authorities in Kiev are an "American puppet" and claiming that Russian forces will win, even though Washington promises additional arming of Ukrainian forces.
Biden met with Ukrainian President VolodymyrZelensky in Kiev, defiantly expressing solidarity with the country that has been fighting a Russian invasion for almost a year in what he called a "brutal and unjust war."
Russian state television covered Biden's visit extensively, with TV anchors saying it was clear Biden was "running things" in Ukraine, which fits the Kremlin's narrative of Zelensky as a puppet of the US administration.
Vladimir Rogov, a Russian official in the occupied parts of the Ukrainian region of Zaporozhye, said in a statement to the Russian agency RIA Novosti that "Zelensky looked like a servant next to Biden."
Other commentators have assessed that Biden is starting his candidacy for a new presidential term by visiting Kiev.
Claims that Biden received security guarantees from Moscow ahead of the visit could also be heard on Russian state television.
US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said the US government informed Moscow of Biden's visit shortly before his departure for Ukraine "for de-confliction reasons" to avoid any missteps that could bring the two nuclear superpowers into direct conflict. .
Pro-government political analyst Sergei Markov said in a political show on Russia 1 television that "everyone knows that if Russia said it would not target Kiev during the visit of a statesman, it would never happen, because it keeps its word, and is on the side good and civilized.
The deputy head of Russia's Security Council and former president of that country, Dmitry Medvedev, wrote on the Telegram social network that Biden received "security guarantees" and added that the American president "showed loyalty to the neo-Nazi regime."
