MBBS in Tripura Through NEET UG 2026: The Quiet Opportunity Most Aspirants Overlook

Aug 29, 2026

Tripura [India], August 29: While lakhs of NEET aspirants chase seats in Delhi, Karnataka, and Maharashtra, a small northeastern state has quietly become one of India's most favourable destinations for MBBS admission. Tripura's medical seat capacity has expanded dramatically in the last few years; its counselling is conducted entirely online, and for eligible candidates, the competition is genuinely gentler than in most large states. Here is everything aspirants and parents need to know for the 2026 admission cycle.
Tripura's Growing Medical Education Landscape
Until recently, Tripura had just two medical colleges and around 225 MBBS seats. That picture has changed. With the entry of a new private medical college in 2024 and an expansion of intake at the government college, the state now offers approximately 400 MBBS seats across three NMC-recognised institutions -- a near doubling of capacity in a short span.
Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC)
Established in 2005, AGMC is the state's flagship government medical college. It sits on a 42-acre campus in Agartala, is affiliated with Tripura University, and is attached to the multi-speciality Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital, which gives students strong hands-on clinical exposure across emergency, trauma, and speciality departments. As per the National Medical Commission's latest seat matrix (AY 2025-26), AGMC's annual MBBS intake stands at 150 seats. As a government college, its tuition fees are among the most affordable routes to an MBBS degree in the region.
Tripura Medical College & Dr. B.R.A.M. Teaching Hospital (TMC)
Established in 2006 at Hapania, Agartala, TMC is a trust-run institution with an annual intake of 100 MBBS seats. The majority of its seats are filled through the state quota, while a portion is reserved under the management quota -- notably, this is one avenue through which candidates from outside Tripura can also seek admission via the state counselling.
Tripura Santiniketan Medical College (TSMC)
The newest entrant, TSMC received NMC approval and admitted its first MBBS batch in 2024 with an intake of 150 seats. It operates alongside a large multi-speciality teaching hospital. Because the college is new and does not yet have a long cutoff history, its closing ranks have tended to be lower than those of AGMC and TMC -- a meaningful opening for candidates with moderate NEET scores who want a Tripura-based MBBS.
Tripura MBBS Seat Capacity at a Glance

Seat figures are based on the NMC seat matrix for AY 2025-26. The exact round-wise seat matrix for the 2026-27 session is published on the official counselling portal before each round, and candidates should always verify from that document.
Who Can Apply -- And Why the Odds Are Favourable
Honesty matters here, because this is where many aspirants get misled. The bulk of Tripura's seats -- the state quota -- is reserved for candidates holding a Tripura Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC) or otherwise meeting the state's domicile criteria.
For these candidates, the arithmetic is genuinely encouraging: roughly 400 seats serving a small state's applicant pool means the effective competition per seat is far lower than in populous states, and cutoffs -- particularly at the newer TSMC -- reflect that.
Candidates from outside Tripura are not shut out entirely, but their routes are specific: the 15% All India Quota seats at AGMC, which are allotted through MCC's national counselling, and the management/NRI quota seats at the two private colleges, which are filled through the state counselling and are open to all-India candidates. Anyone promising non-domicile candidates easy access to Tripura's state quota seats is misinforming them.
A Fully Online, Stress-Free Counselling Process
Tripura's undergraduate medical counselling is conducted by the Tripura Medical Counselling Committee (TRMCC), constituted under the Directorate of Medical Education (DME), Government of Tripura, on a digital platform integrated with the National Informatics Centre. For the 2026-27 session, Round 1 registration opened on 18 August 202C, and the entire process runs online:
1. Registration and fee payment on the official TRMCC portal
2. Document upload and verification, followed by publication of the state merit list
3. Online choice filling and locking of preferred colleges and courses
4. Seat allotment and issuance of the nomination/allotment letter
5. Physical reporting at the allotted college -- required only after a seat has been allotted -- for final document verification and admission
Neither candidates nor parents need to travel anywhere during the registration, choice-filling, or allotment stages. Seats left unfilled in Rounds 1, 2, or 3 are carried into subsequent rounds, including a stray vacancy round. Note that candidates may register only once; multiple registrations under different categories lead to rejection.
The counselling covers MBBS along with BDS, BHMS, BAMS, and BASLP courses, so aspirants across the medical and allied streams participate through the same portal.
Documents to Keep Ready
Candidates should keep scanned copies prepared: proof of age, the NEET UG 2026 scorecard and admit card, the Higher Secondary (10+2) mark sheet, documents supporting Tripura eligibility (such as the PRC), and applicable category certificates -- SC/ST/OBC-NCL, EWS (for the relevant financial year), or disability certificate in the prescribed format. All documents are verified physically at the time of reporting, so authenticity is non-negotiable.
Why an MBBS from Tripura Is Worth Serious Consideration
Beyond the favourable seat mathematics, there are real qualitative reasons to study medicine here. AGMC offers a government-fee MBBS with strong patient load at GBP Hospital -- the kind of clinical volume that builds competent doctors. Agartala is a compact, affordable capital city with an airport and steadily improving connectivity, which keeps the overall cost of five and a half years of study modest. All three colleges are NMC-recognised and affiliated with Tripura University, so degrees carry full national validity for postgraduate entrance and practice anywhere in India. And with the state's healthcare sector expanding, graduates find growing opportunities close to home.
A Word of Caution for Aspirants and Parents
Every genuine admission to a Tripura medical college happens through NEET merit and official counselling -- either TRMCC for state-level seats or MCC for the All India Quota. There are no backdoors, no "guaranteed seats," and no agents who can influence allotment. Treat any such claim as a red flag. Rely only on the official portals for schedules, seat matrices, fee notifications, and results, and pay fees only through the official portal's payment channels.

The Bottom Line
Tripura has transformed from a one-college afterthought into a 400-seat medical education hub with a transparent, fully online admission system. For Tripura-domiciled candidates, it represents one of the best seat-to-competition ratios in the country; for outside candidates, the AIQ and management quota routes remain worth evaluating.
Complete your Round 1 registration on the official portal without delay -- in counselling, the early and well-prepared candidate always has the advantage.
