Icelandic authorities activate response plan amid rising earthquake activity

Nov 12, 2023

Helsinki [Iceland], November 12: In response to the escalating earthquake activity in the country's southwestern Reykjanes peninsula, Icelandic authorities have activated an emergency response plan aimed at ensuring a well-coordinated effort between relevant parties, particularly within the tourism sector.
The Tourism Action Board (ASF) and the Tourism Executive Group (FHF) are scheduled to convene on Sunday, aligning with the swift evolution of events and established contingency procedures, said the government in its press release issued on Saturday.
Earlier Saturday, the town of Grindavik, home to approximately 4,000 people on the Reykjanes peninsula, was evacuated. Civil Defense declared a Level of Danger in the area.
According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO), a magma corridor lies beneath the town of Grindavik, and a fissure could open anywhere in that magma corridor.
There have been three eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula in the last two years.
